Next Training Ride – June 3!

Besides the stunning scenery, the beauty of the Loon Echo Trek is that if you start today you have five months to prepare. How far will you ride this year? 25 miles? 50 miles? 100 miles? Choose your challenge and invite others to also discover Maine’s best kept trek secret. Registration is now open and training rides will be held throughout the summer on the first Sunday of each month at 8 a.m. These rides will vary in length and difficulty and will take you on courses that surround the lands we protect.

Our next ride will be held on Sunday, June 3 at 8 a.m. We will meet at the Crooked River Elementary School on Route 11 in Casco. Our ride will begin with a short distance on Route 11, turning onto Route 121 into CascoVillage. We will pedal down Mayberry Hill Road and past our preserve, into Otisfield, turning back into Casco along the western side of Pleasant Lake with a final climb up Leach Hill Road and back to the parking lot. This is a rolling to moderate hilly 20 mile course. Pace will be determined by riders present and no one will be left behind. All riders should bring water or sports drink, an energy bar and basic tire changing supplies.

“I seldom rode my bike more than 10 miles let alone 50 so the first time I signed up for the Loon Echo Trek it was a leap of faith and I wasn’t sure I’d make it. Out of fear as much as a plan, I began riding each weekend — first 5, then 10, then 15 miles — until two weeks before the trek I’d built up to 30 miles. Sure I could make 50 after all; I loaded up the car for the long drive from New York City. The next day by the time I’m usually working on my first cup of coffee, I was at the 12-mile rest stop and soon enough at the turn-around point by Cold River Campground. I’ve never looked back but I have been back four times. This year will make five.”

Seeing the sights of Western Maine
