Loon Echo Training Ride

Next Training Ride – June 3!

Besides the stunning scenery, the beauty of the Loon Echo Trek is that if you start today you have five months to prepare. How far will you ride this year? 25 miles? 50 miles? 100 miles? Choose your challenge and invite others to also discover Maine’s best kept trek secret.  Registration is now open and training rides will be held throughout the summer on the first Sunday of each month at 8 a.m.  These rides will vary in length and difficulty and will take you on courses that surround the lands we protect.

Our next ride will be held on Sunday, June 3 at 8 a.m. We will meet at the Crooked River Elementary  School on Route 11 in Casco. Our ride will begin with a short distance on Route 11, turning onto Route 121 into CascoVillage.  We will pedal down Mayberry Hill Road and past our preserve, into Otisfield, turning back into Casco along the western side of Pleasant Lake with a final climb up Leach Hill Road and back to the parking lot.  This is a rolling to moderate hilly 20 mile course.  Pace will be determined by riders present and no one will be left behind.  All riders should bring water or sports drink, an energy bar and basic tire changing supplies.

For details on future training rides, visit loonechotrek.org or call 647-4352.

Start training so you can fly up those hills this fall.

Hike challenging, but worth it.

“What a great time! Getting to the top of Pleasant Mountain was challenging but worth it for the views. The hike was nothing less the breathtaking. It was nice to get out and support a great organization protecting the land that we enjoy.”

Something for everyone

“The Trek is one of the best rides I have ever participated in. It offers something for everyone. Whether you are a young family or a serious cyclist, you can count on having a great experience. And the hike is just an added bonus for those who prefer to stay in the woods. The friendly and experienced support along the route is beyond comparison.”

Loon Echo trek was our family event

“We really enjoyed riding the Loon Echo trek as a family event. Our daughter Gwen, who is in high school, joined us and we had a wonderful time. The support was wonderful and the scenery was beautiful.”

The countryside is spectacular

“We are novice cyclists and feel very accomplished after doing the trek! It’s a great day for everyone – the serious century riders and the more recreational bikers. The countryside is spectacular. There is great
support, and friendly rest stops. We’ve been involved as volunteers and/or participants all 10 years and are looking forward to the 11th!”

This year will make five

“I seldom rode my bike more than 10 miles let alone 50 so the first time I signed up for the Loon Echo Trek it was a leap of faith and I wasn’t sure I’d make it. Out of fear as much as a plan, I began riding each weekend — first 5, then 10, then 15 miles — until two weeks before the trek I’d built up to 30 miles. Sure I could make 50 after all; I loaded up the car for the long drive from New York City. The next day by the time I’m usually working on my first cup of coffee, I was at the 12-mile rest stop and soon enough at the turn-around point by Cold River Campground.  I’ve never looked back but I have been back four times. This year will make five.”

Seeing the sights of Western Maine

“The Loon Echo Trek is always a fun and enjoyable experience – going back to its very first year. The last time I participated I rode with my daughter Sabine and we had a wonderful experience seeing the scenery and getting to eat wonderful food at Shawnee Peak. I recommend this ride to anyone who cares about land preservation and seeing the sights of western Maine.”

Counting the days until September!

“I’m counting the days until September! One hundred miles of the best cycling in Maine…quiet scenic riding through the foothills of the Maine White Mountains, a steady paced climb up Evans Notch, friendly and well stocked rest stops, and great company! It is truly the best trek in Maine!”

— Harry Brown, Kennebunk, ME
